🚀 Introduction

India has made remarkable progress in missile technology under DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). With programs like IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme) and the latest advancements in Agni, Prithvi, Akash, and BrahMos systems, India today is among the top missile powers in the world.

For aspirants preparing for NDA, CDS, and other defence exams, questions on Indian missiles are very common in the General Studies section. Let’s dive into the most important missiles you must know.

✅ Classification of Missiles

Missiles can be classified into:

  1. Ballistic Missiles – Follow a parabolic path, mostly surface-to-surface.
  2. Cruise Missiles – Guided missiles flying at low altitudes, can be launched from land, sea, or air.
  3. Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM) – To intercept enemy aircraft.
  4. Air-to-Air / Air-to-Surface Missiles – Launched from fighter aircraft.
  5. Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) – Destroy enemy tanks/armoured vehicles.
