What is PPDT in SSB Interview Preparation ?
The PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test) is conducted on Day 1 of the SSB Interview, right after the OIR Test. Candidates are shown a blurred picture for 30 seconds, followed by 4 minutes to write a story based on the image.
After story writing, candidates participate in a group discussion, where they must narrate their story and collectively arrive at a common story.
📌 Objective of PPDT
The test checks:
Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)
Power of observation
Logical thinking
Clarity of thought
Communication skills
Initiative & leadership

Structure of a Good PPDT Story
A well-written PPDT story must follow a clear and logical structure:
1. Character Introduction
Age (realistic: 18–30)
Gender
Profession (student, NCC cadet, engineer, village youth, etc.)
✅ Example:
“Rohit, a 21-year-old engineering student…”
2. Situation Identification
Describe what is happening in the picture, not imagination.
Ask yourself:
How many people are there?
What are they doing?
What problem or situation exists?
⚠️ Avoid fantasy or extreme assumptions.
3. Action (Most Important Part of PPDT)
This is where most candidates fail.
Your character must:
Take initiative
Assess the situation
Plan logically
Involve others
Lead or cooperate
✅ Example:
“He quickly assessed the situation and motivated others to work together…”
📌 Key Action Qualities to Show:
Problem-solving
Teamwork
Responsibility
Decision-making
Positive attitude
