If you are preparing for NDA, CDS, or AFCAT, clearing the written exam is only half the journey. The real challenge begins at the SSB Interview, a 5-day personality and intelligence assessment designed to select future officers for the Indian Armed Forces.

At The Lakshya Academy, we guide aspirants through every stage of SSB with proven strategies. In this blog, you’ll get a complete step-by-step breakdown of the 5-Day SSB Interview Process so you know exactly what to expect.

What is SSB Interview?

The Services Selection Board (SSB) is a comprehensive evaluation process that tests:

  • Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)
  • Intelligence & reasoning ability
  • Personality & communication skills
  • Leadership & teamwork
  • The process spans 5 days, and each day has a specific purpose.

Day 1: Screening Test (Elimination Round)

This is the most crucial day because 60–70% candidates are screened out.

Tests Conducted:

  • OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating Test)
  • Verbal & Non-verbal reasoning questions
  • PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test)
  • You observe a blurred image
  • Write a story
  • Narrate it

Participate in group discussion

Key Tip:

  • Clarity of thought + confidence in narration = selection.

Day 2: Psychological Tests

This day evaluates your subconscious personality traits.

Tests Conducted:

TAT (Thematic Apperception Test)

  • Write stories based on images

WAT (Word Association Test)

  • Write responses to 60 words in 15 seconds each

SRT (Situation Reaction Test)

  • Respond to real-life situations

SD (Self Description Test)

  • Write about yourself (friends, parents, teachers, self-analysis)

Key Tip:

  • Be natural. Do not try to fake personality—psychologists can detect it easily.

Day 3 & Day 4: GTO Tasks (Group Testing Officer)

These two days test your leadership, teamwork, and physical ability.

Tasks Include:

  • Group Discussion (GD)
  • Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT)
  • Half Group Task (HGT)
  • Individual Obstacles
  • Command Task
  • Lecturette
  • Snake Race (Group Obstacle Race)

Key Tip:

  • Speak with logic, not dominance
  • Be a team player
  • Show initiative but avoid aggression

Personal Interview (Usually Day 2–4)

  • Your interview can be scheduled on any day after screening.

Focus Areas:

  • Personal background
  • Education & achievements
  • Daily routine
  • General awareness
  • Defence knowledge

Key Tip:

  • Honesty is your biggest strength. Be yourself.

Day 5: Conference Day (Final Selection)

This is the final stage where:

  • All assessors (Psychologist, GTO, Interviewing Officer) discuss your performance
  • You are asked 1–2 questions

Outcome:

  • Recommended (Selected for training)
  • Not Recommended

Key Tip:

  • Stay confident till the last moment—every second counts.
  • Important Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)

To succeed in SSB, you must demonstrate:

  • Effective Intelligence
  • Reasoning Ability
  • Initiative
  • Leadership
  • Social Adaptability
  • Confidence
  • Responsibility

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to fake personality
  • Dominating group discussions
  • Lack of clarity in PPDT story
  • Poor communication skills
  • Not being aware of personal details
