What is PPDT in SSB Interview?

The PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test) is conducted on Day 1 of the SSB Interview, right after the OIR Test. Candidates are shown a blurred picture for 30 seconds, followed by 4 minutes to write a story based on the image.

After story writing, candidates participate in a group discussion, where they must narrate their story and collectively arrive at a common story.

📌 Objective of PPDT
The test checks:

  • Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)

  • Power of observation

  • Logical thinking

  • Clarity of thought

  • Communication skills

  • Initiative & leadership

Structure of a Good PPDT Story

A well-written PPDT story must follow a clear and logical structure:

1. Character Introduction

  • Age (realistic: 18–30)

  • Gender

  • Profession (student, NCC cadet, engineer, village youth, etc.)

Example:
“Rohit, a 21-year-old engineering student…”

2. Situation Identification

Describe what is happening in the picture, not imagination.

Ask yourself:

  • How many people are there?

  • What are they doing?

  • What problem or situation exists?

⚠️ Avoid fantasy or extreme assumptions.

3. Action (Most Important Part of PPDT)

This is where most candidates fail.

Your character must:

  • Take initiative

  • Assess the situation

  • Plan logically

  • Involve others

  • Lead or cooperate

Example:
“He quickly assessed the situation and motivated others to work together…”

📌 Key Action Qualities to Show:

  • Problem-solving

  • Teamwork

  • Responsibility

  • Decision-making

  • Positive attitude

4. Logical Conclusion

End with:

  • Successful resolution

  • Learning outcome

  • Positive future result

❌ Never end with failure, fear, or confusion.

How to Write Action in PPDT Effectively

Action is the heart of the PPDT story.

Golden Rules for Action Writing

✔ Action must be realistic
✔ Action must be time-bound
✔ Action must be collective
✔ Action must show leadership or cooperation

Good Action Examples

  • Organizing people

  • Informing authorities

  • Taking first aid measures

  • Managing resources

  • Ensuring safety

  • Crying or panicking

  • Running away

  • Waiting helplessly

  • Depending only on luck
